Marker art - originating from the ancient China

Marker is a medium that has been around for millennia. As early as the first millennium BC, China began to develop a technique where beautiful works of art were created on prepared silk and absorbent paper with sharp lines and washes. Traditionally, water borne, black marker was used, made from soot pigment together with a water soluble binder made from animal glues.

When we talk about marker today, however, the name contains much more than that. From the traditional felt tip pen, felt tip stone, to felt tip liquid acrylic painting. Markers can also be water based, solvent based, and alcohol based, which affects the opacity of the color. A water based marker pigment is very opaque, while an alcohol based marker becomes more transparent. It is perfect when the artist wants to create smooth transitions or paint in several layers.

Marker art includes everything from a pure marker drawing, to paintings with calligraphy and artwork where marker painting has been mixed with other artistic media, such as acrylic, photo, pastel, and watercolor.
