Gouache - an opaque painting technique

Gouache is an old and popular art form originating form Italy, which was already widely used in ancient Egypt and 15th century Europe. "Guazzo", as it is called in Italian, was originally a painting technique where oil paint was used over a base of tempera. Gouache is a type of water-based paint - which perhaps explains why the term itself means something like "puddle" or "watering".

What characterizes gouache paints in particular is their great covering power and dense pigments, which differs from the transparency of watercolor. In other words, gouache is a more forgiving type of watercolor, meaning, allowing the artist to process and correct their work. This is because you can paint light shades over dark ones, as well as paint over underlying colors. When the colors dry, which happens very quickly, they are characterized by a matte and velvety surface.

As with watercolors, however, the binder in the paint usually consists of gum arabic. Gouache is a medium that works well together with other mediums, and is therefore often used in mixed media, for example in combination with watercolors, pastels, or graphite drawings. Over the years, many great and world-renowned artists have used gouache as a medium. Maybe you recognize names like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, Vincend Van Gogh, and Anders Zorn?
