Glass art – a strong tradition in Scandinavia

Glass art - sometimes also called art glass - is a very old and rich tradition. Already during antiquity and in the ancient Orient, glass art was produced, but it is believed that the human began melting glass as early as 5000 BC in Persia.

Even in Scandinavia, art in glass is an old and strong tradition. Not least here in Sweden, where the so-called exaggeration method was developed. It is a technique for creating patterned glass in different colors, with which they started working at Kosta bruk in the 1890s. Today we have many famous glassworks and glass artists in Sweden. Although the tradition is constantly renewed, it lives on.

If one were to try to define what glass art is, then it would be defined as objects of glass that are created primarily to be visually beautiful. Most often, they are produced through special techniques known as blowing, fuzzing, or slumping. The works of art can be in the form of small figures, glass sculptures or window paintings, but glass art can also sometimes lie on the border of utility objects. Examples are vases and decorative bowls, which can just as well be beautiful interior details in our homes, as they can be used for our cut flowers and fruit.

Decorate with a beautiful glass sculpture or glass painting

Glass art can be classic or modern, abstract or figurative, colorful or understated. They really are thousands of different variations, because the only thing that really sets limit is the artist's own imagination and knowledge. Therefore, it is rarely difficult to find glass art that suits personal taste. When you buy glass art at Artportable, you are always buying original art directly from the artist.

Maybe you are hooked on glass art in the form of a painting, which you can display on your wall? Glass paintings are both beautiful and effective. The motifs can be both painted or printed on the glass, which gives them a very vivid expression that adds an extra interesting dimension to the painting. An oversized glass sculpture can be a cool contrast in the minimalist home. The sculpture will also be a natural talking point at the dinner party!
