The term sculpture comes from the Latin verb "sculpere". The word means "to carve out" and is a good description of what a sculpture actully is; a three-dimensional creation chopped, carved out, and sculpted from some kind of material. Although sculpting is a very old art, said to have been born already in the ice age, the choice of materials has developed a lot over the years. Traditionally, a sculpture has consisted of, for example, clay, stone, metals or wood, but today a modern sculpture can be made of almost any material. In fact, they may even include elements such as sound and light.
A sculpture can be created using a variety of techniques, beyond the ancient stone carving. Wood carving, casting, engraving, welding, soldering, glassblowing, and hammering are various examples of techniques that are commonly used. But turning and thumbing are also common techniques, for example, if the sculpture has been created in clay.
There is a great variety in the art of sculpture, but one can still distinguish a couple of main categories. Busts, statuettes, and sculptural works that have been processed and can be viewed from any angle are included in the category of free sculptures. They stand in contrast to reliefs which are instead raised or cut out on a smooth surface. In the category of kinetic sculptures, where the definition is that the sculpture is in some way in motion, we find, for example, mobiles. The last two categories are in situ, which means monumental and site-bound sculptures, and objet trouvé, which includes an everyday object that has been placed in another context by the artist and thus come to be considered a sculpture.
Sculptural objects have come to gain a lot of ground in interior design in recent years. Today, it is really trendy, especially in Scandinavin homes, to decorate with sculptures. It can be in the form of a small figurine on the bookshelf, a classic bust on the side table or beautiful vases and abstract shapes. There really are sculptures for every imaginable taste. For those who prefer the minimalist and clean, and those who decorate with natural materials and organic shapes, or simply, love eclectic and odd original art.
